Practice

Charles appears in Crown Courts across the South-East. He has been instructed in wide range of matters from conspiracies to import class A drugs to violent disorders at football matches.

Charles has appeared in the Court of Appeal. In June 2009 he represented the Appellant in the case of Fazal, an important case on the meaning of "converting" criminal property within the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. This case is now reported  at [2010] 1 Cr.App.R. 6. In December 2006 he appeared for the prosecution in the case of Nelson [2006] EWCA Crim 3412, [2007] Crim LR 709. His article on this case was published in April 2007’s edition of Archbold News.

Charles regularly writes articles on current topics for legal journals. His recent articles have included "Adducing the Good Character of Prosecution Witnesses" published in the Criminal Law Review at [2010] Crim.L.R. p570 and "Sentencing for Possession of False Identity Documents" [2008] Crim.L.R. p702.

As regards employment work, Charles has been instructed in cases involving age and sexual discrimination. Charles is an active member of the Bar Pro Bono Unit for whom he undertakes employment cases. For several years Charles was also an employment law advisor at the Islington Law Centre.

Charles is a keen (but not necessarily good) tennis player. He also enjoys rock climbing, golf, rugby union and any sports that Ireland are doing well at.
