Anthony is a civil barrister with who specialises in the following areas:

Housing and Property

Anthony has extensive experience in this area and takes instructions in all areas of housing and property law.

Before coming to the Bar, Anthony worked as a Housing Manager for a large London-based Housing Association.  He currently acts as a Duty Advisor with Greenwich Housing Rights, a voluntary organisation that provides emergency advice and representation to tenants and homeless applicants.  Anthony participates in Chambers’ seminar programme and recently co-presented a housing law seminar with Mark Roscoe.

Civil

Anthony enjoys a broad civil practice and regularly appears in the County Court instructed in fast- and multi-track trials.  Anthony has particular experience in contractual disputes (involving commercial and consumer contracts), professional negligence and personal injury, credit-hire, company law and insolvency.

Selection of recent work:

  • Dispute concerning the beneficial ownership of freehold property purchased at undervalue.
  • High value property dispute (c. £300,000) involving failure to complete in the purchase of a care home.
  • Advising in various contractual and construction disputes.
  • Advising and representing tenants in residential possession claims brought by private and social landlords.
  • Defending possession proceedings on public law and human rights grounds.
  • Tenancy deposit claim where landlord failed to protect a tenancy deposit in sum of £6,000.  Anthony obtained an award of £18,000 pursuant to s.214 of the Housing Act 2004.  The case was of particular interest as the landlord had defended the claim on the basis that the tenancy was an equitable lease as opposed to an Assured Shorthold Tenancy.
  • Advising in various professional negligence claims involving actions against solicitors.
  • Advising in a dispute concerning the nature and extent of easements granted following the redevelopment of agricultural land.
  • Unlawful eviction.
  • Obtaining order for reinstatement on grounds of oppression.
  • Advising in regards to the enforceability and extent of directors' guarantees.
  • Advising in regards to the administration of an insolvent estate and the recovery of property otherwise lost through survivorship.

Profile

Before coming to the Bar, Anthony had a nine year career in housing.  His roles included: an Advice Centre Co-ordinator; a Researcher for a Local Authority (assessing the impact of the Homelessness Act 2002 on local housing provision); and, a Housing Manager for a large London-based Housing Association.  Through his work he gained substantial legal experience in housing and related fields and an insight into housing law from the perspective of both landlords and tenants.
