Immigration, Nationallity & Asylum Law

Paul has 12 years experience as a specialist immigration barrister.  His expertise covers all aspects of the Points Based System, including the Tier 1 (General) system (Highly skilled individuals, Investors, Entrepreneurs and Post Study Work), applications by Skilled Workers and Sportspersons under the Tier 2 System, as well as Student applications under the Tier 4 system.  Paul also has extensive experience of representing applicants with claims raising issues relating to Marriage, Civil Partnership, Long Residence, Asylum and Human Rights (in particular Article 8 (the right to private and family life) and Article 3 (the prohibition against torture, inhuman and degrading treatment).  His field of expertise also covers immigration bail, deportation proceedings and European Union free movement legislation. 

Paul appears frequently before the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration & Asylum Chamber) and Upper Tribunal and regularly undertakes immigration-related judicial reviews and appeals to the Court of Appeal.  He also has experience of litigation before the European Court of Human Rights and Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.  Paul also sits as an independent Immigration Funding Review Adjudicator.

Paul accepts instructions from solicitors, OISC approved representatives and members of the public on a direct access basis.

International Human Rights Law

Paul has a longstanding commitment to promoting the rule of law and human rights worldwide and is regularly commissioned by international organisations as an expert consultant to conduct justice sector needs assessments, trial observation missions, provide human rights law training to judges, lawyers and human rights defenders, advise on points of international law and assist in human rights litigation before international courts and tribunals. 

Paul has completed consultancy projects for UNDP, OSCE, European Commission, Council of Europe, UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office, International Commission of Jurists, International Legal Assistance Consortium, International Bar Association, International Foundation for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, American Bar Association, Belgrade Centre for Human Rights, European Human Rights Advocacy Centre, AIRE Centre, Kurdish Human Rights Project, Swedish Helsinki Committee for Human Rights and SPEAK Human Rights Initiative.

His field experience presently extends to Azerbaijan, Gambia, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia and Turkey.
