Practice

Paul has over 10 years experience as a specialist immigration barrister.  From assisting with initial applications through to the conduct of immigration appeals, Paul is committed to providing a high quality service of legal advice, drafting and advocacy to all persons affected by UK immigration law.  His expertise covers all aspects of the Points Based System, including the Tier 1 (General) system (Highly skilled individuals, Investors, Entrepreneurs and Post Study Work), applications for UK Work Permits under the Tier 2 System, as well as Student applications under the Tier 4 system.  Paul also has extensive experience of representing applicants with claims raising issues relating to Marriage, Civil Partnership, Long Residence, Asylum and Human Rights (in particular Article 8 (the right to private and family life) and Article 3 (the prohibition against torture, inhuman and degrading treatment).  His field of expertise also covers immigration bail, deportation proceedings and European Union free movement legislation.  Paul appears frequently before the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration & Asylum Chamber) and Upper Tribunal and regularly undertakes immigration-related judicial reviews and appeals to the Court of Appeal.  He also has experience of litigation before the European Court of Human Rights and Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.  Paul also sits as an independent Immigration Funding Review Adjudicator.

Paul is recognised internationally as an expert on the right to a fair trial under international law.   He is regularly engaged by non-governmental, governmental and inter-governmental organisations to conduct justice sector needs assessments and trial observation missions worlwide, train judges, lawyers and human rights defenders on international fair trial standards and assist in litigation before international courts and tribunals.
